India ’s U.S. Exports Plunge Nearly 50% Amid Trade Tensions
India’s export engine has sputtered after the United States imposed sweeping tariffs of up to 50% on Indian goods, worsening trade imbalances and straining one of the world’s fastest-growing bilateral trade relationships. Four months into the tariff regime, Indian exports to the U.S. have collapsed by nearly 37–40%, marking the sharpest fall in recent memory.
U.S. Market Weakens, Labor-Intensive Sectors Hit Hard
Since the new measures took effect on August 27, 2025, shipments from India to America have fallen from $8.8 billion in May to $5.5 billion in September. The steep decline underscores how crucial the U.S. market—traditionally accounting for nearly one-fifth of Indian exports—has been to sectors such as textiles, jewelry, engineering goods, and chemicals, which now face severe contraction.
Ajay Srivastava, founder of the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), described the U.S. as India’s “most adversely impacted destination” since the tariffs began, warning that “the trade architecture built over decades is now under extraordinary strain.”
Energy, Politics, and the Price of Policy
The Biden administration initially sought broader cooperation, but since President Donald Trump’s return, tariffs have reemerged as a key geopolitical tool. India was hit with an additional 25% surcharge linked to its continued oil purchases from Russia—a move Washington framed as “economic pressure on non-aligned energy suppliers.”
Indian refiners have begun to cautiously reduce Russian crude intake, although New Delhi insists it’s acting in its “sovereign national interest.” Meanwhile, talks in Washington this month aim to broker tariff exemptions for select goods, but industry leaders warn that relief may come too late to salvage critical export categories.
Trade Deficit Widens Despite Diversification
India’s merchandise trade deficit soared to $32.15 billion in September, its highest level in over a year, as imports surged, especially gold and fertilizer. While India has boosted trade with the UAE (up 24%) and China (up 34%), these gains were insufficient to balance the U.S. losses. Electronics exports remained resilient, rising 50%, but other sectors like apparel, leather, and steel saw sharp contractions.
Marine products unexpectedly defied the downturn, climbing 23% year-over-year thanks to diversification beyond U.S. buyers—a possible blueprint for future export resilience.
Diplomacy and Next Steps
India’s trade delegation has resumed talks with U.S. counterparts in hopes of negotiating partial tariff rollbacks. However, with both sides entrenched—Washington demanding deeper market access in agriculture and New Delhi defending small farmers—no breakthrough appears imminent.
Trade experts caution that India’s recovery will hinge on export diversification and long-term policy recalibration. As Srivastava notes, “The pain of tariffs could become a catalyst if it pushes Indian exporters to spread risk and upgrade competitiveness.”
