Game-Changer in South America, CBP Advances Isotopic Testing, and Machinery Exclusion Requests Portal

A Game-Changer in South America-Asia Trade Routes

Peru’s Chancay port, built by Chinese companies and set to be inaugurated in mid-November, is poised to become a vital link in South America-Asia trade. Cosco Shipping, the port operator, plans to commence a soft launch in late November, initially facilitating two container ships per week on a direct route to Shanghai. The port aims to expand its reach to other points in the Asian market based on demand, with future plans to open cabotage routes to Colombia, Ecuador, and Chile. The port is expected to handle cargo from smaller ships, progressively increasing to larger vessels carrying up to 24,000 containers. This venture, owned predominantly by Cosco Shipping Ports with a 60% stake, and Peruvian miner Volcan holding the remaining 40%, represents a strategic collaboration between China and Peru to enhance international trade connectivity.
