Customs Broker Continuing Education March 2024

The Customs Broker Continuing Education program aims to ensure that licensed customs brokers stay updated on developing customs regulations and U.S. trade laws. This program, governed by the Continuing Education for Licensed Customs Brokers Final Rule, mandates the completion of 36 continuing education credit hours during each triennial status period. However, for the initial 2024-2027 period, customs brokers will be allowed to complete fewer than 36 hours. The program offers various continuing education credits at no cost to brokers, with the involvement of U.S. partner government agencies. Training from third-party providers must be approved by CBP. The development of this requirement involved collaboration with the broker community and COAC, with public comments taken into consideration during the rule development process.

The new Customs Broker Continuing Education (CE) requirement, as stated in CBP’s final rule, went into effect on Monday, July 24:

  • Individually licensed brokers are not required to report their CE credits to CBP until the 2024-2027 Triennial Status Report, which is due in February 2027.
  • During the initial 2024-2027 triennial period, CBP will not require brokers to complete the full 36 hours of CE credits. However, in future triennial periods, the full 36 hours of CE credits will be mandatory.
